Ricky Gervais was true to himself as he hosted the 68th annual Golden Globes Awards. He was funny and rude, just what we would expect. Gervais opened the show by making jokes about Charlie Sheen, Tim Allen, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. He also made jokes about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association but it seemed to make part of the room uncomfortable.
There were stars who won, stars who lost, and stars who weren’t even nominated. Amongst the winners, Natalie Portman was named best dramatic actress for her turn as an anguished, Paul Giamatti was named best actor in a musical/comedy for Barney’s Version and Colin Firth won the best dramatic actor award for his acclaimed performance in The King’s Speech. The 50-year-old British actor is now the favourite to take the Oscar next month.
As for Robert De Niro, he picked up a well deserved Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award.
